Fun read, but it helps to have read a previous story which helps understand the characters and their actions. I have to "hedge" on the "developed characters" because I don't think this story develops the characters, but rather it continues the character development that took place in other stories. This isn't High literature, but it seems to be competently written, which isn't often the case these days with type of story. I did enjoy it, none the less. It's a fast paced fun read, and didn't give me a nightmare when I read it late at night, nor did I find myself endlessly correcting the writing composition as I read it. I think the editors did a pretty good job of helping this author bring her current story into an interesting place in time.Product details

Dangerous Dough Donut Mystery #18 Donut Shop Mysteries edition by Jessica Beck Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Really enjoy this series.
This is another tale of murder and mystery centered around Suzanne and her donut shop.
Once again she works her case in spite of the police and some shady characters to find out "who done it!"
I have thoroughly enjoyed the first books in the series.....however, the recent books have had way too much meaningless banter between characters.....it seems as if much dialogue is included to lengthen the book rather than relate to the plot.
I loved the beginning of this series, but lately it seems that Suzanne is getting a little too arrogant, with the investigations, she supposedly knows it all!! Even telling Jake, how to run an investigation! Really? I don't know how the characters will work out in the future, but Suzanne needs to tone back her sense of "know it all" about investigations. She's a donut maker!!!! Only time will tell.
I really like Jessica Beck as a writer but I feel a bit short changed with this one. It seemed all too brief and a little stilted. Plus I think I missed the novel in which the Donut shop owner's boyfriend proposed. Guess I will have to go find that one. I am glad they got married. Hope they stay together and nothing bad happens to either of them or their friends.
I have been with this series since the beginning and I have bought every one. This is like comfort food, good when you just want to relax and not think too hard. Predictable and not necessarily believable but I still buy them. Hope that she will throw some curve balls in sometime but it is still acceptable with no bad language or racy content, nice old friends.
Once again, an excellent book. This is the first book after Jake and Suzanne are married. In this book, Jake, Suzanne and Grace are asked to solve the murder of the new police chief after arriving home from their honeymoon. Her mother meets them at the airport and tells them that the police chief was poisoned after drinking coffee out of a cup from their donut shop. Not only are the three (Jake, Suzanne and Grace) determined to solve the murder but they must clear the donut shop of any wrongdoing while Jake and Suzanne were gone on their honeymoon. Due to the trauma that Grace and Suzanne had to deal with in solving this murder, Grace makes a statement to Suzanne that might change their investigations in the future.

I have to "hedge" on the "developed characters" because I don't think this story develops the characters, but rather it continues the character development that took place in other stories.
